Important Guidelines for Wearing Rudraksha Beads

Having studied Rudraksha for many years, I have come to believe that there are several important points to consider when wearing Rudraksha beads. While these suggestions are not strict rules, they are valuable practices that can enhance the spiritual experience and benefits of wearing Rudraksha. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which practices to follow. Here are some key points to remember:

  1. Energizing Your Rudraksha
It is highly recommended to energize or perform Pran Pratishtha (a sacred ritual) on your Rudraksha by a qualified Brahmin pandit in a Shiva temple before wearing it for the first time. Once energized, wear your Rudraksha immediately after the ritual.
  2. Follow Proper Mantras
Before wearing your energized Rudraksha bead or mala for the first time, ensure you recite the prescribed mantras as per sacred texts. This ritual can enhance the bead’s power and connection to spiritual energy.
  3. Avoid Auspicious Times for Buying or Wearing
Be mindful of the Rahu Kaal and Yamghat Kaal (inauspicious times). Avoid purchasing, energizing, or wearing your Rudraksha during these periods.
  4. Perform Rudra-Abhishek
To further energize the Rudraksha, performing Rudra-Abhishek is one of the most powerful rituals. This can increase the bead’s spiritual potency and make it more effective.
  5. Recite Mantras While Wearing or Removing
Whenever you put on or take off your Rudraksha, especially after performing a puja (prayer ritual), recite “Om Namah Shivaya” at least 3 or 11 times.
Rudraksha Mala Rules
  1. Remove Before Certain Activities
It is advisable to remove your Rudraksha before engaging in activities such as:
    • Sexual relations
    • Consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol
    • Attending a funeral procession or visiting a cremation ground After these activities, take a full water bath (including your head, forehead, and neck) before wearing your Rudraksha again.
  2. Handle with Clean Hands
Always handle your Rudraksha beads with clean hands to maintain their sanctity. If you accidentally touch the Rudraksha with unclean hands or after a funeral, cleanse it by pouring Ganga Jal (Holy Ganges Water) on it, recite a prayer to Lord Shiva, and then wear it again.
  3. Keep Hidden and Respectful
Rudraksha is not a fashion accessory. Do not display it openly to others. Keep it well hidden under your clothes, and treat it with the utmost respect as it represents Lord Shiva.
  4. Special Care for 14 Mukhi Rudraksha
The 14 Mukhi Rudraksha is considered one of the most auspicious beads and requires special care and handling. Treat it with extra reverence.
  5. Auspicious Times for Wearing
Certain times are more auspicious for wearing Rudraksha, such as:
    • Poornima (Full Moon)
    • Mondays
    • Shravan Mahashivaratri
    • Navratri
    • Solar or Lunar eclipses
  6. Daily Worship and Care
You may keep your Rudraksha at a sacred place of worship and touch it daily with your forehead while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya.” Read about why there are 108 beads on the Male? More details in our article.
  7. Buy with Earned Money
It is suggested to buy your Rudraksha with your own earned money and not with borrowed funds. This ensures that the spiritual connection remains pure.
  8. Do Not Exchange Beads
Once you begin wearing a Rudraksha, do not exchange or interchange it with others. Each bead carries personal energy and vibrations.
  9. Use a Dedicated Brush for Cleaning
The brush used for cleaning your Rudraksha beads should be dedicated solely for this purpose. After use, dispose of it and always use a new, clean brush each time.
  10. Respect and Care Are Key
The benefits you receive from wearing Rudraksha depend on the respect and care you show toward it. Rudraksha is not just a bead; it is believed to be the embodiment of Lord Shiva, and as such, should be treated with the utmost reverence.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Rudraksha beads work at their highest potential, bringing spiritual and personal benefits. Remember that the care and respect you offer will amplify the positive effects of this sacred symbol.
